IDH has pre-competitively promoted worker well-being, e.g., through the Life and Building Safety (LABS) Initiative which addresses the most pressing life safety issues, related to fire, electrical, and building safety and evacuation in the apparel and footwear industry, as well as the Race to the Top initiative, that addressed worker voice and other working conditions. IDH is looking to build on this experience and develop a similar program for the Kenyan and possibly wider East African market. In the journey to industrialization in East Africa, there is an urgent need to act to promote a safe and decent working environment and especially to mitigate risks of workers’ exposure to fire, electrical, and structural hazardous conditions in factories.
